Unlocking Analogies Grades 2-3

Build critical thinking skills while enhancing their vocabulary and test scores with Unlocking Analogies. Students will learn analogies that deal with shapes and pictures, similarities, part to whole, use to object, antonyms and other common analogy types. Exercises are given a variety of ways, helping students understand the ways in which analogies can be used, and cementing their mental understanding of comparing words. Each unit begins with picture activities to provide a visual connection to the analogy presented.  The activities in this book will help students develop, reinforce, and expand skills in the areas of reading comprehension, reasoning, vocabulary development, and overall attention to detail.

Unlocking Analogies Grades 2-3

With Unlocking Analogies, students will build critical thinking skills while enhancing their vocabulary and test scores.

As a Reading Teacher, I was seeking a way to help the students with inference skills and making connections to what they were reading.  This was key to improving their comprehension skills.  I have always been a believer in the concept of “teach them to think and they can learn anything,” which means teaching critical thinking. In looking into what was recommended for critical thinking in reading, I continually came across the mention of analogies.  I began routinely completing analogies and it worked! To learn more about my 5 Proven Reading Strategies and how this skill played a role in my success and the success of my students, check out my article.

Analogies are types of comparisons that allow us to find the likenesses between two unlike things. They also make for fantastic interdisciplinary teaching tools!

Students showed even more comprehension growth with the incorporation of analogies.  Understanding relationships naturally improved their reading comprehension and boosted their inferential (deductive) thinking skills.  It caused them to begin to critically think about what they were reading and question it on a deeper level.  This resulted in deeper understanding and comprehension.

To solve analogies, students need to use cognitive processes and critical-thinking skills.  Analogies written for this series will focus on a variety of word relationships.

This book guides students through the process for solving analogies. Students learn how to read analogies, the types of words used in analogies, and how to identify the relationships in analogies. Guided practice includes direct, explicit instruction that walks students through the analogy, helps them identify what type it is, and gives them strategies for solving it.  Includes assessment and  answer key with explanations.
