From Teacher Created Resources

Strategies That Work: Comprehension Practice teaches students how to use effective strategies to develop reading comprehension skills.  This book teaches students effective reading comprehension with comprehension practice that works.  Each reproducible page includes literary or factual reading passages followed by a variety of questions that focus on a specific reading strategy.  A set of graphic organizers to help students apply strategies is also included.  The activities are aligned with national standards and benchmarks.

This book is from Teacher Created Resources.  Teacher Created Resources is an educational publishing company founded in 1977 by Mary Dupuy Smith, a classroom teacher. Since they were founded they have experienced tremendous growth, which they believe is mainly attributed to the the fact that they know–first-hand–about teachers, students, and classrooms.  All of their products are “created by teachers for teachers.”  They publish quality resource books at the early childhood, elementary, and middle school levels.

This book is intended to help students develop successful strategies for reading comprehension.  The students accomplish this by reading passages and articles and then answering a variety of questions using a specific strategy.  When the student completes the exercises, he or she will have practiced a strategy and worked through a number of question types from a variety of texts.

Learn more about this book and how I incorporated it in my teaching strategies in my article, 5 Proven Reading Strategies.  In this article I discuss my strategies and their results, for which this book is partially responsible.

k12 Reader.com states that reading is a multifaceted process that develops only with practice. There are certain aspects of reading, such as fluency and word recognition, which can be learned in a few years. These basics must be mastered but at the same time reading comprehension should be emphasized in the process. Students can parrot words on a page all day long but if they don’t have the necessary comprehension skills they will not be able to make predictions about what will happen next, monitor their understanding of content, sequence or characters, clarify confusing parts of the text, or connect what they’re reading to their own experience or prior knowledge. And that is what true comprehension is all about.

Utilizing this book students will learn to use the following strategies:

  • Finding Facts
  • Finding main ideas
  • Noting details
  • Using context clues
  • Drawing conclusions
  • Following directions
  • Using reference materials
  • Understanding questions and paragraphs
